SparkMoneyIQ Introduction

Over the past 12 months, I have spent a significant amount of time discussing personal financial matters with high school students.  As a public speaker, entrepreneur, and father I’ve learned it’s never too early to start discussions with students and new business owners about the impact of everyday financial decisions, especially with teenagers. This is a critical time when teens are preparing to make huge, and potentially life-impacting decisions about finances.  While not every teenager will need to be a financial whiz, they will all be confronted with the realistic challenges of transitioning from an insulated and familiar world of education to an independent and unremitting world of work, and the related financial decisions that go along with the process.

So the question to ask is:

When is a good time to introduce everyday financial concepts to teenagers and high school students?

YESTERDAY.

Why SparkMoneyIQ?

For the modern high school student, financial literacy has evolved from a “nice to have” educational platform to a “must have” necessity to prepare students for the complex contemporary workforce.  In many cases, including Rhode Island, states have mandated financial literacy for all K-12 students.  SparkMoneyIQ developed the interactive workshop series consistent with the fundamental financial principles outlined in the most recent publication of National Standards for Personal Financial Education which is organized around six topics including:

  1. Earning Income
  2. Spending
  3. Saving
  4. Investing
  5. Managing Credit
  6. Managing Risk

While there are several low-cost online, automated learning tools currently offered in the marketplace SparkMoneyIQ founder Tim Sawyer provides a unique opportunity for students to engage, ask questions and benefit from his thirty years of real-world experience as a mortgage loan officer and two-time INC 500 startup co-founder.  Tim has lived in this world over his entire professional career.  In addition to financial concepts, Tim brings the topics to life with stories of how he has applied each of these principles at various points in his career.  Students will often hear Tim say, “so practically speaking, this is how it applies in real life” followed by a personal example. Obviously, you can’t get that from an online learning tool. Equally as important Tim has been a professional teacher for more than two decades.  He has taught more than 10,000 CEOs, business owners, sales and marketing people, financial advisors, insurance agents, and the everyday people who contribute to the success of their business.  His lectures are designed to EDUCATE, EMPOWER and INSPIRE those in attendance.

The presentation left the group feeling inspired and ready to get back on track to reach their goals. Thank you, Tim!”
